Project Saysay, DepEd honor playwrights
In celebration of its 6th founding anniversary, Project Saysay introduced six new honorees to its growing pantheon of great Filipinos in history. They are Francisco Baltazar, author of the timeless Florante at Laura; Magdalena Jalandoni, first Filipina published novelist and pillar of Hiligaynon literature; Isabelo de los Reyes, folklorists, historian, founder of Iglesia Filipina Indepediente, and labor leader; Vicente Sotto, Sr., nationalist writer, journalist, and acclaimed Father of Cebuano Literature; Carlos Bulosan, premiere Filipino playwright abroad and a noted labor rights champion in the U.S.; and Cesar Adib Majul, historian and notable Muslim nationalist.
The list, which is part of the “Seryeng Panitikan” (Literature Series), was announced by Project Saysay last 20 November 2018. This series is expected to form the biggest number of honorees in the pantheon of Project Saysay, given the richness of Philippine literature.
These honorees were officially inducted to the Project Saysay’s pantheon last 11 June 2019 at the Gateway Gallery, Gateway Tower of the Araneta Center in Quezon City. The event coincided with the inauguration of the exhibit Diwa ng Bayan (Sense of Nation), a joint project of Project Saysay and Gateway Gallery for the 121st anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence. It was attended by DepEd Undersecretary for Finance-Budget and Performance Monitoring Annalyn Sevilla and J. Araneta Foundation, Inc. Executive Director Diane Romero.
